SHORTLISTED. The Creative Climate Challenge #4, Coastal Change.
I was delighted to be shortlisted for this event. An event that touches on evolutionary change. Its a social venture and global initiative, supporting innovation in climate communication.
The Series: Nature Energy Technology encompasses many of the topics that are addressed by the CCC. #4 Coastal Change, in particular, was interesting. The artork in the series dealing with water as a natural elements whilst revealing changing global boundaries through its cameraless layering.

ARTIST RESIDENCY. JOYA: arte + ecolgia /AIR, Spain
I am delighted to announce that I have been awarded an artist residency starting in September for 2 weeks at Joy Air, Spain. This wonderful residency intermingles artists and writers in a beautiful part of southern Spain. I have a couple of projects in mind and this wonderful space will give me the time that I need, away from those every day commitments we all have, to develop my project and research ideas further.
I hope to explore a couple of projects connected on a cellular level, as is all my work. I also hope to work a little more with other mediums, more illustration and painting but also an opportunity to take advantage of the wonderful natural light. I look forward to keeping you updated on my progress.

LOIEIL DE LA PHOTOGRAPHIE: THE QUESTIONNAIRE
What a delight to do this questionnaire with the wonderful Carol Schmitz who writes for various publications including The Eye of Photography. A lovely opportunity to talk about my work, ideas, aspirations and motivations plus some funny notes.
The series Nature Energy Technology is a cameraless project that encompasses so much of my other projects, just created without the use of a camera. Using technology ( in this case a scanner ) to show the destructive element of technology on the environment and its elements, the use of geometrical shapes that can be displaced and replaced gives us some hope for a better future. A chance to show the opportunity for change.

Threatening visual stimuli can evoke innate defensive behaviours (freeze and escape) in rodents, so the neurons were rearranged to form an eye, a metaphorical and symbolic reflection of the extraordinary story of the visual exploration of the mouse eye. It is an exploration of all that is hidden and cannot normally be seen by the naked eye. Collaborating with the Australian Neuronal Signalling Group (ANSG), John Curtin School of Medical Research, Australian National University, Canberra, ‘The Eyes I-III’ were created for a journal front cover.

Gold Circle Celebrates unique artworks and I was flattered to be part of their Showcase. In this Q&A, Crawford talks to Marina Syrmakezi, Founder and Curator at Gold Circle about her series titled ‘Nature Energy Technology’, in which she examines the constant change within the Anthropocene and visualises earth at its earlier inception. Through a combination of geometrical shapes interlaced within the organic forms in the images, she creates a visual contrast that reflects the thematic duality of the organic versus the artificial.

'I visited the beautiful mountainous Valli Intelvi region of Lombardy, Italy in November 2019, just before the Coronavirus outbreak’ reveals Crawford.
Her sometimes complex use of different creative mediums is an instinctive reaction and the final artwork develops in a fine art form. Crawford’s work begins with analogue images, illustrations and paper sculptures of the landscape which provide starting outlines and topographies for the final image. The process of layering the analogue images reveals a dislocated landscape reflecting the lives of the local people post Coronavirus. While the paper sculptures provide a reflection of the topography, the digital paint reveals the virus. The abstraction helps to shadow the impact.

I was flattered to receive yet another award for Torn I, from the Camelback Gallery, Arizona, amongst so many wonderful fine-artists.
I visited the beautiful mountainous Valli Intelvi region of Lombardy, Italy in November 2019, just before the Coronavirus outbreak. Using black and white analogue photography as a background for the images, then adding in abstract digital images and sketching, I was able to dislocate the landscape reflecting lives torn apart a few months later.The Series Lombardy has been one of the most difficult for me to realise, having found myself so emotionally attached to the place and its people. Abstraction somehow helps to shadow the impact and reflect the ambiguity of the unknown. I am presently, continuing to develop the series.

RPS JOURNAL MAY/JUNE. HOW I DID THIS.
I was delighted to be asked by the RPS Journal for a short article on how I created this image.
The pandemic has inspired many artistic responses, covering both the human and scientific elements of the virus. With such a crowded field, it can be hard to create genuinely unique and attention-grabbing works. Yas Crawford ARPS, a trained geologist turned microbiologist who works in what she describes as The Grey area between art and science, spent the first UK lockdown creating some striking images that do bring something new to the conversation. Torn, a series inspired by the devastating early impact of Covid-19 in Italy, is abstract in nature but specific in its scope.Here, Crawford, who was recognised by the Tokyo International Foto Awards for the project, explains how she created this dynamic and colourful work.

Imagining earth at its earliest inception the artist captures its energy as she anticipates its future. Combining cameraless scanning techniques the artist not only challenges the norm but dislocates the environment around us. A new normal is created from the technological chaos.
Thanks to this exhibition, 2.440€ was raised and donated to Red Cross Ukraine.

Video Animation: Sarshar Dorosti is a new media artist and multidisciplinary researcher with an MSc Animation, Tehran University. He explores through generative systems and fractal art, a complex approach.

‘Sentience’ as a more intelligent and aware form of consciousness,‘The Edge’ for more obvious reasons. The images are part of a series of images that I have worked on with my daughter over the last six months, who suffers from social anxiety. It was a way to discuss, communicate and heal.

“The perfectly composed image in classical black and white, is full of movement and dynamic flow.”
This year’s winner reminded the jury of the of the first experiments with emulsion exposure on glass plates and was a representation of the explosion that we sometimes feel takes place in our heads. Even though one may not immediately be able to identify what is being depicted, an array of affects may be transferred from the maker of the visuals to those experiencing an encounter with them.

Group Exhibition, 15th - 23th June 2021, Rome city.
'Decontexts' exhibition examines the object and how it acquires an "internal space", and with this it takes autonomy from the external space and is no longer an object in a space, but is itself the creation of its own space of representation: it becomes removable, and can be displayed in any place. It imposes questions such as "how much context is needed for us to categorise an object? How much can be taken away before an object completely loses its identity, before it truly becomes something else?".

Yas Crawford using 2D and 3D photography creates imagery that acts a backdrop for the production as well as reveal the directional flow of the honey bees. The sun’s position is essential for how the swarm navigates. As the sun rises and the pesticides cause devastating effect, the gentle flow of the bees and their navigation systems are interrupted.
In Collaboration with Sophie Evison, Evolutionary Biologist, Nottingham University, Amy Bonsor (stitched mixed media) and Amy Corcoran (sound).

Astragalus Root has been chosen from amongst many creative international artists for the beautiful online and book Lounge 2, Vol II 2021 created with poetry to celebrate Beethoven's 250th Anniversary, 2021.
The Universe and Chinese Herbs is an exploration of the play of light through a solution of different Chinese herbs using digital and analogue photography. The planets symbolic of the repetitive circle of universal chronic illness, healing and solitude.

Oxygen Ib, is a representation of the cellular damage caused by post-exertional malaise in Myalgic Encephalomyelitis sufferers (or Chronic fatigue Syndrome). Through an exploration of perspective, complexity and scientific investigation I create imagery that reveals, explains and connects us consciously to the ambiguous and unknown. The mapped landscape revealed in the images acts as a vessel to transport the science in a certain time and place.

The looming shadow during the dark winter days unveils deeper emotions that become visible in the work of many artists. In this disruptive period of the pandemic with its invisible threat, we are even more isolated from others than average winters, which gives more space and time to ponder about life. In our exhibition "Inner World", no less than 70 photographers show in an imaginative way how they are engaged in self-reflection during the winter.

SERIES: BLOOD, CELLS & NEURONS
'Blood, Cells & Neurons' examines Post-Exertional Malaise or PEM as it is more familiarly called. It is the extreme exhaustion, pain, cognitive networks and deficits that present after exertion in M.E patients with an extremely slow return to baseline. The return could be as long as one day, weeks or months. The mapped landscape revealed in the images acts as a vessel to transport the science in a certain time, creating a safe place for the viewer to absorb the information.The abstraction removes the onerous requirement of controls and variables leaving space for subjective expression.

Yas Crawford is a multi-disciplinary photographer from Pembrokeshire Wales. Pembrokeshire’s arts, geological landscape and biological make-up were the first pillars in the development of Crawford’s practice. As an artist she approaches her work from a variety of different angles, having studied Geology, Photography and Microbiological Methods. This fact allows her to provide through her work both the pragmatic and factual element of science as well as the experiential, abstract and aesthetic element of art. Her pictures are created by combining digital and analogue photography with archival bioinformatic images from her research project. The result of which is this series of striking ambiguous imagery which invites the viewer to dive into themselves and engage with their physicality in new and at the same time very informative and thought provoking ways.

The series 'Lombardy' was chosen amongst many images of photographers work that emerged during Lockdown. Having visited the Lombardy region, Italy, just before the Coronavirus outbreak in November 2019 the images were created as an immediate and emotional response impact of Coronavirus. Using cameraless scanning techniques combined with topography, geometry and mapping to dislocate and hold timeless a moment in time.

Following a visit to the Lombardy region just a few months before the Coronavirus pandemic struck, a series of cameraless images were created as a memory of the region, using multiple layered scans and sculptures from analogue photography. The dislocated mountains of the Valli Intelvi disrupted as were their lives some months later.

Yas Crawford uncovers the current UK research on cellular dysfunction occurring as post-exertional malaise or PEM as it is more familiarly called in Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (M.E) patients. It is a description of the extreme exhaustion, pain, cognitive deficits and other symptoms that present after exertion in M.E patients with an extremely slow return to baseline. The image 'Oxygen Ib' was created using a scanning electron microscope, an archival image and a map. The map representing a universal condition.

Three images were accepted for the Palazzo Velli Exhibition during Rome Art Week. July 2019
One aspect of Yas Crawford's work investigates neurological Interoception in Myalgic Encephalomyelitis Patients or Chronic Fatigue Syndrome as it is more familiarly called. Interoception is considered to be The 8th Sense, a link between bodily sensation and emotional reactions. In recent decades the idea of how the body processes information and bodily sensations has created the idea of the experienced phenomenologically lived body as the basis of consciousness. Limited computational and cognitive theories suggests that the study of interoception remains enactive.
