In the middle of a stressful week, I squeezed in this shoot with Pete, an ‘M.E Warrior and Survivor’ he tells me. His story is long and his M.E started with an ear infection during a very busy schedule organising an anti-apartheid rally. He became seriously ill and taken into hospital in 1989 where he was kept until he was diagnosed with CFS. Unusual in the days when this condition was stigmatised as ‘Yuppie Flu’. He has spent the last 20 years on a journey of recovery from counselling to counsellor to moving to San Fransisco where he joined a buddhist retreat which was next door to an HIV retreat, where part of his recovery was in supporting these patients through their terrible ordeals. He left feeling he was on his way to recovery. Although this condition is not a psychological condition it leaves us all managing a multitude of emotions along the way.
Now Pete dabbles in photography, poetry and pottery defining through his work, life as he sees it.
For the first time, I recorded a video of Pete narrating one of his poems.. here it is….PETE ‘A CUP OF TEA’ and a hint of the theatrical.
The video is unedited except for an image at the start and end and is still a work in progress. Its a trial and a start at recording individuals. Theres lots to correct, background noise, smooth running of the video and a better overall introduction and some text might add to the ambience, giving the project more meaning.
I intend to continue to see Pete, work on editing these images in the abstract and I will keep you posted with the results. It is more likely that we can complete a story with Pete as his M.E has abated enough for him to continue. At least I hope so or this will remain his ‘Unfinished Story’
